For my unit 3 project, I chose the topic that I have been researching throughout the semester, and that was technology in the classroom. I decided that I wanted an audience that I could closely relate to and research about, and I was among them – students in college. In the beginning, I wanted to argue about how technology was hurting students’ education, because I felt negatively towards it, and that was my argument for the unit 1 project. I felt negatively towards it because I would always experience negative effects when I use technology, so I wanted to dive deeper into it. For the second unit, I dealt a lot deeper into this topic and discovered many new things. I started realizing that technology had a lot more benefits than I thought, and some of its negative effects aren't directly correlated with the use of technology. For this writing prompt, I read the graphic novel titedl "Poppies of Iraq" by Brigitte Findakly and Lewis Trondheim. This graohic novel goes into detail about the life of a girl (who in this case, is the author), written in first person, is connected to her home country, Iraq, while having educated, middle-to-upper class parents working in France. She talks about the political environment in Iraq have experienced dramastic changes throughout her childhood, and how she hasn't really been affected by this due to her family background and socioeconomic status. But, she has been around people who have been affected by this, such as her neighbors. Additionally, she talks about her experiences being Christian in the Arab world, which is known to be majorty Muslim, and how that is also just another element that puts her in a separate category than everyone else around her. I listened to the podcast, "There was An Attempt." This podcast goes into detail about the relationships between the white Americans and the Native Americans. They talk about how the white settlers were continuously insensitive towards the natives. They would have different, and often offensive depictions for them. For example, there was an ad/poster of a Native American where they were red, which is a clear way for white settlers to categorize them into someone else, into a group of people who aren't like them, but rather inferior. We see this multiple times throughout history, where natives were forced out of their villages, forced to go to 'white'' schools where they were taught to repress their native traditions and cultures, their language and more - they were clearly seen as inferior and unwanted by white settlers.
